“From Here” Lexine Lowe was born in 1949 and raised in Salisbury, Maryland, with maternal roots in the 17th century in nearby Dorchester County. She attended Pinehurst Elementary School and spent summers swimming in local ponds, boating on the Wicomico River, and frolicking with her many dogs. An avid young equestrian, her interest in riding and hunting continued into her adult years when she served as joint master of the Wicomico County Hunt Club. Her father, Hermus Lowe, served as a two-term Wicomico County commissioner and a House of Delegates member. Mr. Lowe owned the iconic Oaks Drive-In, the Lower Shore’s teenage gathering spot in the 1950s and early ’60s.

After graduating from James M. Bennett High School in 1967 – the first year of full integration in Wicomico County – Ms. Lowe attended William & Mary College, after which she returned to Salisbury and began a decades-long career as a social worker and an adjunct professor at Salisbury University. She now resides on a Century Farm in Dorchester County with her husband Fred Pomeroy, who is a poet, lifelong waterman and farmer. The couple is active in local environmental groups and are often the only “From Heres” among their many friends and coworkers.

Lexine Lowe will be at the Toyota Narrative Stage as part of Different Perspectives: Come Here/From Here. “Come Here” Ladd G. Colston will share his perspective of a fresh-eyed newcomer to the Eastern Shore, and “From Here” Lexine Lowe will share her experiences growing up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and how it has radically changed since.
