Deal Island Skipjack Races

Artist featured on Narrative Stage sponsored by Toyota.

Following in the footsteps of his father, who became a skipjack captain at 16 years old, Stoney Whitelock worked on the boats as a young man. He loved this way of life that connected him to his family and the community. Once he started a family, he worked as a lineman, eventually owning his own successful business, but he was always drawn back to the boats. Within a few years, he became a captain as well as the race director of The Skipjack Race and Festival of Deal Island, raising funds and successfully building engagement and participation to make it an annual event that has built upon its success year after year. After retirement, Whitelock turned his efforts full time to working on the water and the complete restoration of forgotten skipjacks. In the years since, he has brought four of these boats back to life and returned them to the water, either as working dredges or for recreational or educational endeavors.

Captain Stoney Whitelock will be at the Toyota Narrative Stage sharing a lifetime of stories and experiences on the water.
