
Eastern Shore Gyotaku

Robert “Robby” Chin is the founder of Eastern Shore Gyotaku, a business inspired by the rich and diverse waterways of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Through the traditional Japanese art form of gyotaku, Robby combines a deep respect for nature with a passion for sustainably caught and foraged food, using art to honor the life of each creature and the memories tied to the day it was harvested.
Gyotaku, which originated in Japan in the early 1800s before the advent of photography, was developed by fishermen as a way to document their catches. They would apply squid ink to the fish and press it onto rice paper, creating a direct ink impression while still preserving the fish for consumption. Robby carries on this tradition, believing in the importance of helping people understand and appreciate the unique ecosystem of the region he calls home.
